Nathan (prophet)

Nathan was a prophet who served King David during his reign.

In 2nd Samuel chapter 7, King David had the desire to build a house for the LORD, seeing that he himself dwells in a house of cedar while the Ark of Yahweh dwells in a tent. Nathan said to him, "Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee." (2nd Sam 7:3) However, the LORD had Nathan tell David that He will raise up a son for him that will build His house, and that He will establish his son's kingdom forever.

in 2nd Samuel chapter 12, following David's adultery with Bathsheba and his putting her husband Uriah the Hittite on the battlelines to die, Nathan used the story of a rich man stealing a poor man's prized lamb to expose David's sin, that the LORD has seen what he did and will punish him accordingly. When David confessed that he has sinned against the LORD, Nathan told him that the LORD has put away that sin so he will not die. Later on, following the heartbreak of having his infant son be stricken to death, David fathered another son with Bathsheba called Solomon. "And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD." (2nd Sam 13:25)

In 1st Kings chapter 1, Nathan helped Bathsheba prevent Adonijah from usurping King David's throne by exposing the plot to the king. David then had Nathan, Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada put Solomon on his mule and anoint him as king, keeping with the promise that he made to Bathsheba.
