Jeremiah, known as "The Weeping Prophet", was a prophet called by God to prophesy to the people of the Kingdom of Judah from the time of King Josiah's reign to the Babylonian takeover and destruction of Jerusalem and even into their departure into Egypt against God's desires.

History[]

Early Life[]

Jeremiah was born in Anathoth, a Levitical city in the tribe of Benjamin. His father was a man named Hilkiah,[1] possibly the same individual as Hilkiah the High Priest, who served during the reign of King Josiah. He had a cousin named Hanamel, the son of his uncle Shallum.[2]

Called by God[]

He was called to be a prophet in the thirteenth year of Josiah's reign (627 BC),[3] when Jeremiah was a youth.[4]
