Hymenaeus was a heretic that stood against the young preacher Timothy in Ephesus. The apostle Paul warned his son in the faith that men like Hymenaeus had denied the authority of God, endangering their souls. The Apostle had personally directed his excommunication in hopes that the erring teacher would learn his lesson.[1]

As Paul faced execution in Rome, he did not hold out much hope for Hymenaeus, who had not only denied the teaching of the resurrection, but had begun to spread his false message among the churches. Evidently a persuasive speaker, the apostate had caused many to waver in their own faith.[2]
