Cush was an Israelite of the tribe of Benjamin who opposed King David. David wrote Psalm 7 in response to the words of Cush.
Identity[]
Cush is not mentioned in the Bible outside of the title of Psalm 7. Members of the tribe of Benjamin came into conflict with David on multiple occasions. King Saul was of the tribe of Benjamin, and in the beginning of David's reign he had to fight a civil war against Saul's son Ish-bosheth. When David had to flee Jerusalem due to the rebellion of Absalom, one of Saul's relatives named Shimei cursed and threw stones at David.[1] Later in his reign, a Benjaminite named Sheba also tried to rebel against David.[2] It is possible that Cush had connection to one of these events, but he is not mentioned outside of Psalm 7 so it may have been a completely different occasion.
Psalm 7[]
In Psalm 7, David both cried out to God for deliverance, and expressed confidence that God will indeed deliver the righteous and punish the wicked.[3] David declared that when he was in trouble, he would seek refuge in God.[4]
