Abdon (Hebrew: עַבְדּוֹן ‘Aḇdōn, "servile" or "service") was the son of Hillel the Pirathonite. He was the eleventh judge of Israel.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Abdon was born in Pirathon to Hillel the Pirathonite (~1200's B.C). He was born in the judgment of Gideon to Israel and later in his life, Abimelech the son of Gideon as king. In his early life he might have seen Israel's disobedience to Yahweh and the oppression of the surrounding nations including the tyranny of Abimelech. His father might be a keeper of asses speculating the fact that his sons have plenty[1].

Judge to Israel[]

His contributions as a judge are unknown. He may have fought against the Philistines after succeeding Elon. He reigned for 8 years. And he had forty sons and thirty sons' sons, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts[2].

Death[]

Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites[3]. Samson later succeeded him.
