God's True Character: Exodus 34:6–7

When you think about the Lord, how do you conceive of him? A God of Justice? A God of Mercy? Who is God, or more specifically, Yahweh—God as defined and worshiped in the canon of the Bible?

Our instincts may lead us to the New Testament—the revelation of Jesus Christ. But how did the Hebrews (and later the Jews) understand who God was?

We hear of the supposed dichotomy between the “God of the Old Testament”—wrathful, punishing, and selective and the “God of the New Testament”—loving, merciful, and inclusive

.

Yet one of the most important, if not the most important, thesis statements about God’s character in the entire Bible is found in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible/Tanakh). Its the most quoted verse within the Old Testament, Exodus 34:6–7: …

Jesus the Disrupter

Some forty days had passed and it was time for Mary to purify herself, according to Levitical law. By a miracle, Mary had bore the baby Jesus but had not slept with any man at this point.

Here we meet the famous Simeon, who had been promised to see the Savior in the flesh during his lifetime. He praised God and announced to everyone in the temple courts how the baby would bring Salvation to all people. Yet, those were not his last words concerning Jesus. Imagine Simeon holding baby Jesus in his arms and declaring the future Salvation, but then pivoting his stance towards Mary to speak a blessing to a her:

“. .  . this child is appointed for the fall and [rise] of many in Israel, and for a sign that is [spoken against] (and a sword will pierc…

The Sign of the Rainbow

If you are like me, it is easy to take signs of God’s love found in nature for granted. The other day, when I was out walking, a ginormous natural sign hit my eyesight—a rainbow. I’ve seen rainbows many times, but on that day the Spirit stirred my heart, “Remember the rainbow!”

I think there is more to the rainbow than what we make of it, biblically speaking. In today’s world the rainbow is used to represent everything from Autism awareness, to worldly views of human sexuality and gender, to a happy (and inaccurate) representation of the Great Flood that adorns the signage of Christian preschools.

What does the Bible say about the rainbow? When the rainbow enters our gaze, what thoughts should come to mind? The promise of the rainbow has mea…

Trilogy of Energy

Eph 6:10 begins this section with an exhortation in three areas. Unfortunately, most people (and most commentaries) are confused as to what they mean.

(vs. 10a) “Finally, my brethren, be __________[i] in the Lord, …” The Greek word endunamoo is related to dynamoo (from which we get the English word “dynamite.”) Strength is physical energy (body): ass (Gen 49:14), hands (vs. 24), arm (Luke 1:51), feet and ankles (Acts 3:7), conception (Heb 11:11), ox (Prov 14:4), horse (Job 39:19-21, Psalm 147:10), wind (Job 8:2), bulls (Psalm 22:12), etc. It’s pictured by the ‘unmovable, unbreakable’ strength of rocks (Psalm 31:2), stones and brass (Job 6:12).

Fortunately, Christians have an ‘extra gear’ physically which lost people don’t have (Heb 11: 34), “Quenched the violence of fire, e…

Temptation

If you study the Bible carefully you will see that each kind of temptation you experience has a specific response designed by God to defeat it.

The correct response for temptations of the flesh is to flee. You cannot win if you linger over things that appeal to it. That’s why Paul said in Rom 13:14 to make no “provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” Instead of making provision (opportunity) for the flesh, Paul says to bring your physical desires under control by mortifying (put to death) your earthly members (Col 3:5-7) and the deeds they perform (Rom 8:13).

Use the references below to fill in the blanks with things you should flee.

Who is an example this exact principle? ______________[v] (Gen 39:7-12)

  Use the references to fi…

Strength, Power & Might

Eph 6:10 delineates three energy sources which most people (and commentaries) can’t define properly.

(vs. 10a) “Finally, my brethren, be _____________[i] in the Lord—physical energy (body): ass (Gen 49: 14), hands (vs. 24), arm (Luke 1:51), feet and ankles (Acts 3:7), conception (Heb 11:11), ox (Prov 14:4), horse (Job 39:19-21, Psalm 147:10), wind (Job 8:2), bulls (Psalm 22:12), etc. It’s pictured by the ‘unmovable, unbreakable’ strength of _________[ii] (Psalm 31:2), stones and brass (Job 6:12).

Fortunately, Christians have an ‘extra gear’ physically which lost people don’t have (2Cor 12:9–10), “And he [Lord, vs. 8] said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my ___________[iii] is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirm…

Spiritual Food Groups

Most Americans know about food groups—foods with similar nutritional properties or biological classifications. Nutrition guides divide foods into groups and recommend daily servings for a healthy diet. In the United States for instance, the USDA has anywhere from four to eleven different food groups.[i]

Write the following categories of food groups in the blanks: confections, dairy, fruits, grains, meat, vegetables.

·       __________:[ii] (milk products) milk, butter, ghee, yogurt, cheese, cream and ice cream

Which Bible?

A quote from the translators of the 1611 Authorized Version delineates several of the quandaries facing any translator of God’s Word, “… that out of the Original Sacred Tongues, together with comparing of the labors, both in our own, and other foreign Languages of many worthy men who went before us, there should be one more exact Translation of the holy Scriptures into the English Tongue; …” The key issues in determining the value of any translation were:

·      method: formal or dynamic. They understood the need to preserve God’s inspired word (“more exact Translation;” Rev 3:8, 10).

·      manuscripts: preserved or reconstructed. They were careful to use “preserved” texts [“Original Sacred Tongues” (Hebrew and Greek, universally accepted as inspired and pres…

Sin Personified

The story of “Cain and Abel” is one of the most famous stories in the whole Bible. Abel gave the first of his flocks in his sacrifice to God, while Cain did not give the first-fruits of his crop- he gave the leftovers. When God rejected Cain’s sacrifice, he becomes angry. Here, God uses one of the most interesting descriptions of sin in the Bible- sin is personified as “crouching at the door”.

“Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is [for] you, but you must rule over it.” Genesis 4:6-7

But what does this really mean? Let’s take a look at what this means, what it doesn’t mean (you may be surprised) and how this applies to …

The Date of Christ's Death Revisited

3 years ago, I wrote an essay on the date of Christ's death. I examined much evidence surrounding the the beginning and ending of Jesus' ministry, and came to the conclusion that Jesus died on April 25th, AD 31. Recently, I have been working on a timeline of the history of the Bible. I started fresh with everything, re-examining all the dates and evidence throughout the Bible and relevant history, as well as new theories as well as old ones, some barely taking root but stirring things up, and others well rooted among scholars but left largely unquestioned. The timeline I linked to is a result (albeit, still a work-in-progress) of this research. In the process, I went over the dates of when Jesus was born, began His ministry, and died. Feel…

Its Not About Christmas or Easter

Its not about Christmas, or Easter or for that matter Sunday. What do I mean? I don’t mean- “Don’t celebrate holidays”. Absolutely we should celebrate the Sabbath, Christmas and Easter. Heartless religion does not please God. So often our celebration of these days like Christmas and Easter and even our weekly Sunday gathering at church is religious, but has no true heart for God.

The Path to God

Throw Your Gold in the Trash

What do you consider valuable in your life? When we hear the word “valuable” or “priceless” we often think of money or precious gems. What we think of as valuable and what truly is valuable are often very different things. How much do you value your relationship with God? Can you say that everything else feels like trash compared to God?

In the Book of Job, Eliphaz gives us some great life wisdom. The Book of Job is considered “wisdom literature”, which means (like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes), it contains many pithy sayings on life. We often miss the great wise sayings found throughout Job, because we focus so much on the grand idea of “why do we suffer” (which The Book of Job actually does not answer directly)......

Faith and Mountains: God's Work

Recently I had the chance to visit Mt. Rainier in the State of Washington, which is one of the largest mountains in the United States. Mt. Rainier was literally the biggest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. It could be seen from long distances away and towered far above everything in its vicinity. The mountain was as tall, wide and thick as the eye could see. The mountain was not only untouchable, but impenetrable and immovable. The qualities of mountains make them ideal symbols for the obstacles of life- oftentimes immovable and towering far above anything else in life. The Bible uses mountains as a symbol for the seemingly mountainous assignments God gives us and of life’s greatest struggles.

How to Store up Treasure in Heaven

You’ve probably heard the saying that we should “store up treasures in Heaven” instead of focusing on earthly possessions. This phrase is used by Jesus numerous times and once by Paul, but is first and most famously used in the Sermon on the Mount.

The question then becomes, “How do I seek treasure in Heaven?”. There is great news. We do not have to speculate or even infer wisdom from the Bible indirectly. Did you know the Bible tells us directly how to store treasure in Heaven? Let’s take a look directly at how we “lay up treasure in Heaven”.......

Life Lessons from David and Bathsheba

If you have ever been in church, than you have probably heard the infamous account of “David and Bathsheba”, that is, the adultery of David and Bathsheba and David’s eventual murder of her husband. Clearly this event in David’s life is warning against adultery and its grave consequences. It is a clear example of how even David, the “man after God’s own heart” traumatically fell into sin. All of these things are true, but what does this episode really mean for my life? What life lessons can I learn from David and Bathsheba?

Yhezqel's Prophecy

There is an interesting relationship between Roshe, Paras and the house of Togarmaw right now. If Gomer is not already involved with them, he will be soon. I will be interested in seeing how Coosh and Poot join them, and who else joins them.

Roshe and the house of Togarmaw are both in the distant north in relation to Yacov.

This great horde will not attack until after Yacov has obtained peace. And he does not yet have peace...

Sheba, Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish will question Rosh but will not do anything else. Yet who are they? Are they the Arabi and some of Yapet?

Were There Monotheists in the Northern Kingdom?

"The Ten Tribes living in the Kingdom of Israel during the 8th century B.C.E. practiced a mixed religion, but contrary to the conventional wisdom among biblical scholars, their main deity was Yahweh after all, not the Canaanite god El and his envoys, golden calves and goat-shaped demons." -- Bohstrom, Haaretz Magazine

Was the worship of "El", or was it "Elohim" (the general name for the true God )? The "conventional wisdom" that the writer attempts to debunk by the archeological evidence is not the only interpretation of the Biblical record. Yes, the prophets condemned synchronism, but the evidence seems to parallel the use of the golden calf in Yahweh evidence in Exodus , lead by none other thanAaron himself. While dancing drunk around th…

Nothing

At school, during one my classes, we had to do a 1 1/2 minute to 2 minute presentation on a topic of our choice. I chose to talk about nothing. I later used my notes to write out the presentation, which is located below.

"I might talk about something, definitely nothing, and I won’t talk about anything.

What is nothing? Nothing is the absence of space, time and energy. Now when I say energy, I am including mass and matter since they are somewhat equivalent (according to Einstein). I would also like to define the word “universe.” It comes the Latin word universum, which means “whole body of things that exist.” This includes all space, time and energy. So outside of the universe there is nothing, and before the universe existed there was nothi…

Jesus Tunnel Vision: Hebrews 10:32-12:17

You have probably read or at least heard of two famous passages from Hebrews Chapter 11: the Hall of Faith and Chapter 12:1-2. What if we are missing the real point behind these passages? This passage is so much more than a demonstration of the power of faith, but there is a much greater and often missed point here.

In order to understand this, we must go back to the context in Chapter 10. The author of Hebrews prompts his readers, Christians with a Hebrew heritage, to consider the struggles of their past brought about by persecution, but Jesus did experience this.

Finally, the author interprets an old Hebrew proverb written by Solomon: Don’t ignore the discipline of God, do not allow it to wear you down for it is done out of love. The author…

A Teaching of the Cross

During his crucifixion, Jesus hung on the cross in darkness for three hours. On the closing verge of the darkness, Jesus echoed the great question of David, recorded in Psalms (22). Even while on the cross, Jesus taught something: rest in God! He used David’s deep question and made it his own while he suffered excruciating physical pain, ultimate humiliation and an intense spiritual battle (which brought about Salvation). When feeling abandoned by God, rest in him. Study Psalm 22 and discover David’s amazing insights into life.

My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?

My God, my God, Why have you forsaken me?

There are some questions that don't make sense until they are asked by the right person. The question penned by David is surely one that many feel in their darkest times--times that cause doubt to arise in even the purest heart. The king, a man loved by Yahweh, found it hard to reconcile much of his trouble with his knowledge of God's loyalty to His promises. But David had proven by his actions at times that he was not worthy of God. He felt himself to be the lowest of the low, an unclean maggot in the garbage dump--a reflection on Psa. 21:31--"He has done it".

Let us, children of the Living Savior, get the message out. God is Good, All the Time.

Will God reject forever: An exposition of Psalm 77

Suffering can lead to some of the most surprising and difficult questions, often leading to the doubt of God’s goodness. The psalmist and musician, Asaph struggled with some of the great questions of God’s goodness while suffering and wrote them down in what is now the 77th Psalm.

Asaph started by recording his suffering (either a past or present event): every time he thinks of God he is in despair, his soul is exhausted and his arms are outstretched without rest, he is speechless and does not obtain any rest.

In Asaph’s great questions of doubt, he recalled God’s good works of the past. While God’s actions may have been different for Asaph in that time, Asaph had assurance of God’s goodness based on recollection of past events. While anyon…

Does God treat good and bad the same?

Why does it seem that God treats good and bad people the same? Abraham asked this same question. In 1897 BC, God visited Abraham and Sarah manifested as three men. He came with some good news, Sarah would give birth to a Isaac well beyond her child bearing years. With the promise of many descendants, Abraham had the burden of imparting righteousness on his children, so that it would carry on for future generations. Standing by the trees in Mamre, the three men contemplated whether or not they should reveal God’s plan to Abraham. Wanting to teach Abraham God’s righteousness they revealed God’s plan- to visit the metropolis of Sodom and destroy it if it proved to be wicked.. Abraham knew God’s nature, without it being shown to him; yet he doubt…

Where are God's deeds when you need them?

When bad things happen, where is God and the good things he brings? This a common question that many people have today when going through times of suffering. Over 3,200 years ago (around 1191 BC), Gideon asked this very question. Yes, Gideon the mighty warrior of God struggled with the same question, “if the is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying ‘Did not the bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian” (Judges 6:13 ESV), we doubt God’s ability to bring goodness out of bad circumstances. God punishes evil, but he always is willing to restore your relationship with him.

Why Does God Allow Injustice?

Why doesn’t God punish evil? This is one of the greatest questions people have today, but this isn’t a new question. This has been one asked for thousands of years, since near the beginning of time. While this is a prevalent modern question, we can find an ancient answer to our question- in the places where people asked this question of God.

In about 600 BC, a prophet of God named Habakkuk asked this very question (Job asked a similar question to his friend 1,000 years earlier.

You are not a Child of God Unless...

You are not a child of God unless….

you know Jesus Christ as Savior. It does not matter how religious you are, if you believe in God, Heaven or even Satan and Hell . Even though you were created by God, that does not automatically make you his child. The phrase “child of God” or “son of God” (in this sense, “son”  means child) originates from Scripture , yet Scripture does not create an environment where anyone can claim to be God’s child. This does not ruin the fact that every human is created and is loved by God . If you say you are a child of God, back it up- what part of the Bible applies to you so that you can claim that title?
